How long auto body repair usually takes, and what sets the time

How long does auto body repair usually take?

How long does auto body repair usually take? It depends on one thing more than any other: whether the paint is still on the damage. A dent with intact paint can be finished in an hour. A panel that needs filler, primer, colour and clearcoat takes days, and most of those days are curing time rather than work on the car.

Shops quote the time differently, so the same job can come back as a same-day fix or a week away. This guide sets out the timeline for each method we use at our Al Quoz workshop, what moves the date on your car, and what a quote should say before you hand the keys over. Our body repair service covers all of these methods, and the times below are the ones our technicians work to.

How long does a dent with the paint still on it take?

A small door ding usually takes under an hour. Paintless dent removal (PDR) pushes the metal back from behind the panel. Nothing is sanded, filled or painted, so there is no paint to cure. A medium dent takes one to two hours, and several dents on the same panel can take two to three hours. The panel is checked under a light before you collect the car. Our paintless dent removal guide explains where the method stops working.

Pricing follows the same logic. A small door ding starts at AED 250 and a medium dent runs AED 350 to 500. Time and price move together here, because the technician's hours are most of the cost.

Why does paint take days rather than hours?

Paint takes days because each layer has to cure before the next one goes on. Once the paint is broken, the repair has more steps: filler where the metal sits low, then primer, a colour-matched basecoat and clearcoat. Between coats the panel is sanded lightly and cleaned. That waiting is part of the job, not idle time. The clearcoat then needs a full cure before anyone polishes it, and that is where most of the calendar time goes.

How long does a respray usually take?

A single panel respray takes two to three working days, counting the cure. A full car respray takes five to seven working days, because the trim, handles, lights and mirrors come off first and go back on at the end. The full cycle is set out in our body repair process guide.

The same-day paint job: what gets left out

A paint job finished the same afternoon usually means the cure was cut short. Clearcoat that goes on too early can look right for a few weeks, then haze, lift or show marks. The Dubai sun speeds that up on a car parked outdoors, so a rushed finish is the one most likely to come back.

Ask any workshop how long the panel stays in the booth, when it will be polished, and what aftercare it expects in the first weeks. A specific answer, with days in it, tells you more than a promise of speed. Ask too whether the finish is checked in daylight before the car goes out, because daylight shows a colour mismatch that looks fine under workshop lamps. Our best repair guide sets out a checklist for comparing workshops on this point.

What moves the date on your car?

Five things set the date on a given car. Depth of damage comes first. A scratch that stops in the clearcoat is a spot repair, blended into the paint around it. A scratch that reaches the primer or bare metal needs more layers, so it takes longer and needs more cure time between them.

Colour matching is next. Metallic and pearl colours need more test cards before the match is signed off. Faded factory paint needs the same care. The match is the step most likely to add a day on a painted panel.

Parts come third. If a panel has to be replaced rather than repaired, the part has to arrive first. That is usually the step that moves the finish date the most, so ask whether the part is in stock before you book.

Insurance can add time before any work starts. A claim routed through an insurer's approved workshop needs approval first. Agree the start date with the insurer and the workshop on the same call, so the car does not wait for a sign-off it could have had earlier.

Several damaged panels make up the last one. Three or more panels are usually done one after another, and the last panel sets the finish date. A shop that gives you one date for the whole car should be able to say which panel sets it.

What should a quote say about time?

A useful quote gives a start date and a completion date, not only a price. It also says which method is used on each panel, because a PDR panel and a respray panel finish on different days. If the workshop finds more damage once the panel is open, the quote should say how many days that adds, and it should tell you before the work goes ahead.

Keep the dates in writing. If the workshop has to move them, ask for the change in writing too. A date you can hold a shop to is worth more than an estimate given on the phone.

Planning around the repair

Tell the workshop how you need to use the car on the first call. PDR often fits a same-day slot, so you may drive home the same day. A respray keeps the car for the full cycle, so arrange another way to get around before you book.

Our workshop at Al Quoz Industrial Area 3 is open Monday to Saturday, 8AM to 6PM. Send photos of the damage on WhatsApp, taken in daylight from two or three angles. We will tell you which method the damage needs and how many days it will take.
